Justin van Fleet

Chief of Staff

Justin van Fleet is Chief of Staff to Rt. Honourable Gordon Brown, in the Office of the UN Special Envoy for Global Education. van Fleet graduated with a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in international education policy and holds a Master degree from Harvard University in the same field. Dr. van Fleet also serves as a nonresident fellow at the Center for Universal Education at Brookings and an advisory board member of the Global Business Coalition for Education.

Prior to joining the Office of the UN Special Envoy for Global Education, van Fleet’s research focused on education in developing countries, particularly the role of corporate social investments and philanthropic financing of education systems, as well as the dynamics influencing public-private partnerships. van Fleet has dozens of publications and conference presentations on philanthropy, public-private partnerships, global citizenship, and education in developing countries.

van Fleet serves on the Board of Trustees of Creative Minds International Public Charter School in a volunteer capacity. Previously, van Fleet has served as Deputy Chair for Education at the Clinton Global Initiative under Gene Sperling, an Instructor at the University of Maryland, Associate Director of the Council on Foreign Relations Center for Universal Education and Education Program Manager at NetAid. He has also held positions in educational capacities at the Harvard University François-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
