High-Level Emergency Coalition for Global Education

The High-Level Emergency Coalition for Global Education brings together influential leaders from across sectors to champion education for each of the 59 million out-of-school children through the Education Countdown Campaign. The coalition was launched at the 2015 Global Education Countdown Summit with UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, who has made getting every child into school a priority of his Global Education First Initiative, and includes the members of the High-Level Panel for Global Education. The coalition is co-chaired by Gordon Brown and Graça Machel.

The coalition addresses the global education emergency:

  • 59 million children are still out of school and the last girl will not enroll into school until 2086 unless we change the rate of progress.
  • World leaders have yet to appreciate the centrality of education to their economic, health, security and peace prospects.
  • Too little has been done to address the evils of child labor, child marriage, child trafficking and discrimination against girls, all of which must be addressed if we are to get all children to school.

Members of the coalition agree to:

  • Mobilize key actors to support the delivery of education, particularly in the countries needing to make the greatest progress towards ensuring every child has the opportunity to go to school and learn.
